These two evening gowns from 1923 designed by the couture House of Lanvin show the sleek beauty of a straight-cut chemise style dress and the level of embroidery and beading used.
Historical Image
While the chemise dress is most often associated with the 1920s “Flapper,” many other dress styles were popular. The yellow dress in this fashion illustration depicts the Robe de Style, which adheres to the dropped waist of the 1920s, while providing fullness at the side of the hips and more yardage in the skirt. The skirts were often supported with small paniers much like the fashions of the 18th century.
